Welcome to the Dollhouse: The Peaches Christ Experience

Welcome to the Dollhouse: The Peaches Christ Experience
with special guest Heather Matarazzo

SF Sketchfest and Peaches Christ Productions once again join forces to bring a unique film celebration to the Castro. Todd Solondz’s darkly hysterical film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival, follows eleven-year-old Dawn Wiener, a middle child in middle school in the middle of New Jersey. Sometimes hated, often reviled, seldom understood, Dawn tries in vain to put on a happy face as she struggles through the onset of what looks to be a long puberty. The Peaches pre-show will feature musical numbers and other surprises and a special onstage conversation with the star of the film, “Dawn Wiener” herself, Heather Matarazzo.

SF Sketchfest in the Mission

February 7, 2013

SF Sketchfest in the Mission:
CharlesDJ RealThe Dress-Up Gang and host Yogi Paliwal

SF Sketchfest is proud to present their ongoing series of showcases at the intimate Dark Room Theatre in the Mission District! Some of the best emerging sketch, improv, stand-up and alternative comedy in the country and the world!

A cerebral and imaginative sketch duo from Seattle, Charles is intelligent without sacrificing accessibility, seamlessly combining highbrow and lowbrow sensibilities into a brand of humor they call unibrow. Charles has performed throughout the US and Canada, including The SF and Seattle Sketch Festivals, the People’s Improv Theater New York, and the Toronto and Victoria Fringe Festivals. Outside the group, Chuck has worked as a contributing writer for The Onion, and Charlie served as editor-in-chief of Stanford University’s humor magazine The Chaparral. “One of the most inspired and inspiring chunks of comedy produced all year.” – The Stranger / “Best Solo or Duo,” 2011 LA Comedy Festival

Nick Stargu is DJ REAL, a San Francisco-based musical/comedy performer who writes songs about David Copperfield, and evil paper bags. His shows include all original songs, complete with costume changes, bad dance moves, and interactive multimedia, He has performed in the San Francisco Sketch Festivals (2008 – 2010), the NoisePop ‘11 festival and Bridgetown Comedy Festivals 2011 and 2012. He was also part of the successful alternative comedy showcase, Things We Made, in San Francisco. “…DJ REAL was a very strange, and strangely wonderful combination of lo-fi recording artist and Andy Kaufman comedian…” – SF Weekly

The Dress Up Gang is a sketch comedy group featuring the comedic talents of Cory Loykasek, Donny Divanian, and various other non-paid actors. Both funny stand-ups in their own right, Cory and Donny crossed paths in San Francisco in 2009 and quickly discovered their mutual love of dressing up. Soon they began filming sketches with the help of their friend Robb Boardman. The famously hard to please SF blog Uptown Almanac has said The Dress Up Gang is “worth checking out.” This is their third year appearing in Sketchfest.

Yogi Paliwal started comedy in 2008 at the young age of 18. He left stand up to pursue love and education, but when those roads closed he decided to focus more on standup comedy. In his few years in the Seattle comedy scene he has performed at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, The FunnyFest Calgary Comedy Festival, a finalist in the 96.5 Make Jack Laugh comedy competition and he made it to the Seattle NBC Standup for Diversity Showcase. Carl Warmenhoven the manager of the Comedy Underground has said, “He has a youthness about him.” If you were to ask Yogi how he would describe his comedy he would say it’s “Intellectual absurdity.” If you asked him what that means he would say, “My material isn’t smart, but you need to be smart to see how stupid the joke is.”

SF Sketchfest in the Mission

SF Sketchfest in the Mission:
The Fringe RidersHam Pants ProductionsHip.Bang! and host David Gborie

SF Sketchfest is proud to present their ongoing series of showcases at the intimate Dark Room Theatre in the Mission District! Some of the best emerging sketch, improv, stand-up and alternative comedy in the country and the world!

The Fringe Riders are a popular Los Angeles based absurdist cowboy comedy trio. They tell tall tales, sing, and dance as Mustang, Birdman, and Papa D, three legends of the West. Every month they host Stampede! a wild-west comedy revue which features some of the nation’s top comics. The Fringe Riders have also performed on some LA’s most popular comedy shows and venues. The Fringe Riders are Dan Gill, Colin McCormick, and David Venhuizen.

Ham Pants Productions is the brainchild of Andy Wenger (Writer, Director) and Damien Chacona (Writer, Producer, Designer), two non-native San Franciscans who wanted to create theater in their image: irreverent, irrelevant, and inane. Since 2008, Ham Pants Productions has put up three full-length offerings (The Safe WayRandom Idiot Factor, andThe Wrong Dick) skewering tropes in apocalyptic horror, dystopian science fiction, and noir, respectively. Ham Pants Productions Presents, a sketch comedy and variety revue, is currently playing the illustrious Stage Werx Theatre at 446 Valencia Street in San Francisco on the third Tuesday of the month at 8:00 pm! Learn more athampantsproductions.com or “Like” us on Facebook.

Hip.Bang!’s absurd, playful scene work has delighted audiences at comedy festivals around the world including Chicago, New York, Edmonton, and Philadelphia. They are two-time winners of the Victoria Fringe’s Pick of the Fringe award (2011, 2012) and were selected as the 2011 Vancouver International Improv Festival’s Best of the Fest (Runner’s Up). While exploring real emotions and honest situations, Tom and Devin simultaneously allow their scenes to be as ridiculous as they are hilarious.

David Gborie comes to party. He’s been telling jokes all over the country for a couple of years now and he is, in his words, “Pretty legit at it”. He currently lives in San Francisco where he is a member of Sylvan Productions and can be seen around town lurking at one of their many shows or at Crissy fields with his trusty crab pot. As a perfomer he’s appeared at The Bridgetown Comedy Festival, SF Indie Fest, and Denver’s Too Much Funstival, as well as the SF Punchline, The Denver Comedy Works, and other impressive venues. He despises the word swag.

R. Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet Sing-Along

“R. Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet Sing-Along” hosted by Henri Mazza

In TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET, R. Kelly’s classic hip hopera, Kels takes on the role of Sylvester, who has a simple one-night stand with a preacher’s wife and then ends up in a web of preposterous lies and a series of outlandish plot twists ranging from used rubbers on his bed to an asthmatic midget male stripper who likes to hang out with a white chick named Bridget. Throughout all of these misadventures, the drama is played fiercely straight, and it’s hard to tell if R. Kelly is in on the joke as the tale is told through rhyme after rhyme after rhyme.

Over the years, some audiences have hailed TRAPPED as the “Plan 9 From Outer Space of music videos,” while others have recognized it as the undisputed masterpiece from our generation’s greatest living R&B legend. But whichever camp you fall into, one thing is certain – there will be no better cinematic event this year than singing and dancing in a theater full of other R. Kelly fans at the fully interactive R. Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet Sing-Along.

Brought to you by the Action Pack, the group made famous by creating dozens of interactive events for the Alamo Drafthouse, this Sing-Along event will take TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET and give it the full Rocky Horror experience, with subtitles on screen to make it easy to sing-along (or just keep up with the story if you’ve never seen this majesty before), and plenty of rubbers to throw into the air when R. Kelly’s character finds one underneath his covers.

But that’s not all. Oh, no, there is soooo much more.

Because TRAPPED may be R. Kelly’s latest masterpiece, and the long-awaited premiere of NEW chapters this fall on IFC and IFC.com has given us the opportunity to create this cinematic event of the century, but R. Kelly has a full catalog of equally incredible music videos, and there’s no way we’re going to start the show without turning the entire theater into a full on dance party of awesomeness. To that end, we’ve also subtitled a collection of R. Kelly’s other greatest songs, so you can sing and dance along with Bump ‘N Grind, you can Step in the Name of Love, and you can definitely put your key in the Ignition (yes, the remix). Your mind may be telling you, “No,” but your body… your body is telling you “YeeeEEEEEEsssssSSS!” Go ahead and give into that impulse, and prepare yourself for all the glory of R. Kelly.

February 2, 2013

SF Sketchfest in the Mission:
FemikazeMakin’ Friends Havin’ FunPianoFight’s ForePlays and host Nathan Brannon

As the East Bay’s premiere all-female comedy team, Femikaze brings the finest in pro-feminist, pro-funny sketch comedy. Founded in 2011 by Kelly Anneken and Isa Hopkins, Femikaze strives to create opportunities in comedy for ladies of all shapes, sizes, ethnicities and orientations. The group sold out their first three independent productions at Berkeley’s Subterranean Arthouse in their 2011-2012 season.  In addition to performing and writing their own material, Femikaze is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization.  They are developing a curriculum to cultivate comedic voices in young women ages 12-19 with a special focus on those in low-income areas.

Do you enjoy ten year old’s birthday parties? Have you ever dreamt about a jar of mayonnaise? Do you acknowledge that you have the potential to be the worst amateur magician ever? Great. Whatever it is you said, we agree. Now that you’ve gotten to know us, you should watch our show. It has everything to do with the aforementioned topics. Which is to say it might have nothing to do with any of them. Makin’ Friends is a new San Francisco production company that loves sketch comedy. Makin’ Friends also loves you. Makin’ Friends wants you to be havin’ fun.

ForePlays produces original sketch comedy written and directed from the female perspective. Its variety show format includes original comedy shorts, musical acts, and stand-up comics, uniting up-and-coming female artists in the Bay Area. ForePlays has premiered over fifteen original productions with more than 50 performances, in addition to special showcases at SF Improv Festival, SF SketchFest, SF TheaterFest, WomenROCK , Comedy Brains, A Funny Night for Comedy  and an 80th birthday party for an awesome woman named Norma. ForePlays is written and produced by Ruth Grossinger, Nicole Hammersla, Kate Jones, Jessica Mele, Rachel Rockwood, Emma Rose Shelton, Meredith Terry, and Sarah Wright-Schrieberg.

Nathan Brannon takes the audience on an unexpected ride full of witty stories, clever punch lines, and amusing shadow puppets. He brings smiles and hilarious anecdotes to the stage every time he grabs the microphone. Nathan also added this sentence because he needed a higher word count. Nathan has participated in competitions such as the San Francisco & Seattle International Comedy Competitions. He was the winner of Helium Comedy Club’s “Portland’s Funniest Person Comedy Competition” in 2012, and winner of the Yakima Valley Comedy Competition in 2010. Nathan also participated in Comedy Festivals all over the country. He has opened for national headliners such as Dave Chappelle, Matt Braunger, Maria Bamford, Arj Barker, Shang, Larry Miller, and has photoshopped himself into photos with many more. Nathan was also seen in NBC’s new series, Grimm. Make Nathan your vote for student body president this spring. Go Hawks!

The Business is a long running weekly alt comedy showcase, recently voted “Best of SF” by the SF Weekly. Four comedians (Caitlin Gill, Sean Keane, Alex Koll, and Bucky Sinister) each curate a portion of your evening. It’s a comedy mixture that regularly includes special guests ranging from standup comics to authors to sketch performers to musicians and dancers. Recently, the Business expanded its operations southward with The Business LA, every Thursday in Silverlake. “…San Francisco does have a comedy scene—it’s just a little weirder, a lot less commercial, and often much funnier than what you’ll find elsewhere, and The Business is at its rumbling epicenter.” – San Francisco Magazine.

Yacht Rock Heroes with Mustache Harbor and Friends

Yacht Rock Heroes with Mustache Harbor & Friends
with Scott AdsitMatt BesserJon DoreChris Hardwick and Paul and Storm and more

Relive the cheesy wonderfulness of 1970s soft rock with Yacht Rock Heroes with Mustache Harbor & Friends. Mustache Harbor, the increasingly popular Bay Area-based cover band will perform the hits along with special guest vocalists who just might be comedy characters created for the occasion by Scott Adsit, Matt Besser, Jon Dore, Chris Hardwick, Paul and Storm and more.

Mustache Harbor is a group of dedicated and talented musicians brought together by their astrological signs and a love for vintage soft rock and sweet stashes. Formed in Northern California, M.H. is comprised of Steven Moon on Keys, (whose spiritual experience as a limo driver for Michael McDonald fueled his desire to play soft rock.) Pat Vornado on Bass…..yes, THAT Pat Vornado. Russ ” solid” Gold… out of Biscayne Bay, on drums. “Pretty” Rick Dallas on Guitar, and Dan ” the man” Kingsford on vocals, acoustic guitar and overall frontman-ness. If we are not at the Dojo, perfecting our kick-ass moves, you will find us in, on, or near the water, producing sweet sounds as smooth as the summer sea. Our mission, our destiny, is simple, to build a mustache army capable of creating a Soft Rock Explosion the likes of which has not been seen since the days when Christopher Cross, Steely Dan, Ace, Kenny Loggins and The Little River Band, to name but a few, created A.M. Gold. So Join us! party with us, live with us, work out at the dojo with us, sing with us, slap on a stash and drink from our bountiful coconuts filled with delicious grooves and tasty hooks.

ENJOY THE RIDE!

Olde English: The Exquisite Corpse Project

Olde English: The Exquisite Corpse Project
with Colin Mahan: Preview: The Movie!

Ben Popik brought his former comedy troupe a challenge: the five comedy writers would each write fifteen pages of a movie, having read only the previous writer’s last five pages. They agreed with one stipulation: if they wrote the movie, he had to make it. The result is this one-of-a-kind narra-doc crossover that is equal parts comedy, psychosexual thriller, children’s television show, love story, and supernatural adventure. Meanwhile, documentary footage provides an inside look into the creative process and the group dynamics that make collaboration between friends difficult. A hilarious ride in a runaway car cobbled together from junkyard parts as hijacked by schizophrenic geniuses.

“Essential viewing for all fans of comedy…. It also just might be the funniest film you’ve seen in a while.”

- SLACKERWOOD

Colin Mahan: Preview: The Movie: MegaCorp CEO Michael Douglas wants to repurpose MegaCorp content into one long movie made up of bits of other movies. Only ghost in the machine Jean Claude Van Damme can stop it. Impressions ensue.
